Final Installment ----- Snowman!

Happy Sunday All!

I promised you a picture of my snowman's family.

It's amazing how different they all turned out.  I might make a second one after the holidays that is white and make hats for the seasons.  Can you tell I'm addicted!  lol

So our success stories are for the snowman are:  The snowman in yellow is Maryann's.  I call that the Daddy snowman.  Mommy snowman was made by Joann and is in the purple.  And of course baby ie fleury is mine.  I might change his pom pom on his hat but other than that he's done.  You can see him on display at the store.

If you are a knitter you too can join in the fun.  Upcoming events.  November is a PHD knitting so you can come in and just knit and have fun without having to put it down every five minutes.  December we will be doing socks and in January/February we will be making wool helmet liners for the troops.  If your interest let us know and once the official colors that are allowed are in you can come in and start making the liners!

November Happy Hours

Yesterday I told you about November classes.

Today we talk Happy Hours.

Have you been to a Happy Hour?  If not you are missing out on not only a great time but demonstrations of some great gadgets and techniques.

This month we have Locker Hooking w/Kathy.  Monday, November 7th at 11am or Tuesday evening November 8th at 6:30 pm.  (yes that is not a typo.  6:30pm).  What is locker hooking you ask.  See below.  Sorry about the font changing.  we'll see if i can fix that or not......lol

Locker Hooking is an ancient craft that had all but disappeared until 2009, when Theresa Pulido single handedly put locker hooking back on the map with her runaway club hit Hook, Loop and Lock.  Locker Hooking is easy, economical, and relaxing, and a great way to use up stash.

Locker Hooked items are created with an inexpensive locker hooking tool which has a crochet hook on one end and a large needle eye on the other end that is threaded with cotton cord. Torn one-inch strips of cotton fabric are pulled through the holes in the canvas with the hook end, and then the cord is pulled through the loops to create loft, locking the stitches in place.

Durable, attractive items, from rugs to purses, can be made quickly and easily with locker hooking.  It is so simple that even children can make inexpensive gifts for the holidays.

Now we go on to Happy Hour w/Phil Clark.  This month he will be demonstrating his zigzag template.  He will have templates available for you to buy so bring cash!  Thursday, November 10th @2pm and 6pm.  YOU MUST REGISTER FOR THESE HAPPY HOURS!

We also have Hand Quilting happy hours w/Anita again.  Don't miss this one!  Come in and learn how to hand quilt!  You can come again if you are still learning or if this is your first time and just want to see what handquilting involves then come on in!  Check out the calendar for dates and times!

Last but not least.  We have Happy Hour w/Jane on flying geese.  Come in and have Jane show you the newest gadget to make flying geese fast and easy and fun!  check out the calendar for dates and times!

reposted so you can see type.

Mr Snowman as he grows

So if you your in the store lately you know what Mr Snowman looks like.

For the rest of you here goes.  I also promise that this coming Friday night the 28th there will be a family picture of the snowman's taken with the other two ladies who also made them!  You will be amazed at how different they are!

First this is Mr Snowman in the middle of week two.  So he's not quite 2 weeks old yet.  This is his head being done.

Now I called that his flubber stage. (you know the movie from Disney!)

Then the next night he looked like this.
now he is really getting close.  he has a neck and a head!  wooooohoooooooooooo

Now since you all enjoyed meeting Abbie.  Meet her older sister Bernadine aka Bernie and this is her first encounter with Mr Snowman!

As you can tell neither of them are looking very excited.........lol

Ignore my mess.  that's my office away from the office.........lol

Finally here is a close up of Mr Snowman.  I think I still want to put a pom pom on his hat.  Ok I'm not sure if I do but I was told I should........lol  The scarf and his face glow in the dark!  If you are in the store and Mr snowman is there ask to check it out!

As I said Mr Snowman and his family will get a family portrait done and you will see that one in next Sunday's final installment of the life of Mr Snowman!

Quilts of Valor

Evening all!

In my last post I mentioned that I was volunteering my quilting.  No that does not mean you get a free quilt done........lol

What it means is that one of the charities Quilters Depot supports is the Quilts of Valor program.  Actually, we support anything and everything that we can possibly support that has to do with our soldiers!  There is not enough that us here at home can do for those brave men and women!

So a few years ago our quilt group did quilts of valor and donated them to a group of soldiers who were returning to North Carolina.  It gives you a great feeling knowing that your hobby will bring some joy those who deserve it!

Now, I am volunteering my my services to the Pittsburgh North chapter of the QOV.  I just finished two quilts and will be getting a third today.

I know your asking, can I help?  Yes you are!  I know it.......lol

Yes you can help!, Whether you are in the Pittsburgh area or somewhere else the QOV program needs people to piece, to Long arm and to bind the quilts.

If you are in Pittsburgh they are really in need of long armers.  I would volunteer more, but I pay for my lunches at the bank by quilting for customers.  I will fit as many in as I can when I can, but you all want your stuff done too.  All you have to do is donate the thread, batting and your time!

If you interested in the QOV program check out their website www.qovf.org .  If in Pittsburgh contact me @ owner@quiltersdepotpa.comcastbiz.net and I will send you the contact information for the Pittsburgh North Chapter.  If not in Pittsburgh find your local chapter or whatever soldier oriented charity and let's help our soldiers!

Embroidery Greeting Cards

I own several Viking machines.  Two of the embroidery machines.  One I use at the store and one sits at home.

One of my biggest regrets is that I do not have a lot of time to sew and embroider.  You would think it would be the opposite owning a Quilt Store.  Don't let it fool you.  Mom gets to sew a little bit more than I do just because I spend my time doing the paperwork and if I'm not trying to do a project I am doing the long arming for customers or volunteering to do other quilting.  I really need to stop that.....hahahahahaha.

So if you were in the store this past Saturday, I was actually getting to use my embroidery features of the machine.  I was putting Christmas designs on a project that mom is going to be doing as a class in December.  Sitting there I really miss doing Embroidery.

Also on Saturday. Jackie one of our awesome customers (Hi Jackie!) brought me in her latest embroidery project to show me.  I sooooooo want to make these.  I just got to find time!

They are embroidery greeting cards!  Of course my brain started to whirl at all the things I can make.

You just use 60 or 65 card stock and your embroidery machine!  I can't wait to find the time to sit down and play with making these!

What do you all think?  Have you done these?  Would you buy them?  Would you do them in the future?

Aren't Jackie's cards pretty?  Great work!

Mr Snowman.........Installment 2

Mr Snowman is a week old!

Look how he has grown!

Time to start his head!

My goal is to have him done before he is two weeks old.  My biggest problem to this is that I might run out of this yarn on his head.  Then I'll have to decide whether to rip out or make his head two toned..........lol  So that might slow me down............lol

Watch Mr Snowman Grow.............Installment 1

So if you have been reading my blog you know I'm knitting and my current project (other than all my Christmas scarves and the chemo cap) that I am knitting is a snowman.

So I thought we'd start a watch Mr Snowman/aka Fleury the Snowman grow.

Excitement!  Don't look at me like that.  Humour me...........lol

Day 1------------I wasn't very happy starting Fleury. I actually  hated Mr. Snowman.  Being a new knitter I had never knitted in the round so I had some learning to do.  Once I mastered (might be too strong of a word, but heck we'll go with it!), I re-started Fleury.

Isn't he pretty.......hahahahahaha

Day 3.  So On Monday it was Columbus day.  Figured after I did some long arming I would knit.  Isn't he growing fast!  My number of stitches = what they should.   WOOOOOOHOOOOOOOO!

Day 6.  OK, so I really should only be giving you one of these a day, but I just came up with this idea so let's go with it.  I like to say i am working on his lower tummy right now........lol  Once I have written this I'll go work on more.  We must have had a blizzard the way Fleury is growing!

Stay tuned to the amazing world of snowman growth! ha ha ha!

How do you learn something new?

Now do not laugh at me.

You know I'm learning to knit.

Here is my first project that is being knitted in the round on DPN (double pointed needles).  No you cannot tell he's a snowman yet.  Give me a few days or weeks.......lol

His name is Fleury the Snowman.  or Mr Snowman depending on my mood.  If I want to drop kick him across the room and the ole 29er has had a bad game he'll be fleury..........lol

This is going to tell you what kind of learner I am.

If I cannot do something, I at  first get frustrated.

Then i rip and try over and over.  Sometimes this means mastering the technique before I go on with the project.

this is the beginner of Mr Snowman ie Fleury.  This picture is so I can remember how to set my needles up.......lol  This is after probably 20 tries with other yarn.........lol

Now it's always important to have someone to help you when you learn.  This is Abbie.

that's the white yarn i was practicing with and my reminders again how to point them.  I know the dedicated knitters are laughing at my protector tips on every end, but hey you gotta do what you gotta do to learn and master.

Don't worry Abbie did not eat anything.  I did the Mommy thing and yelled at her and explained that was bad for her.  Even if she did not help she distracted me when i was ready to give up.........lol  Friends encouraging also helps......lol

So how do you learn?  Are you like me and just have to master a concept.  Believe me when I don't you can tell it in my projects!

Ok, enough rambling for this week.  Hope you have enjoyed all my posts.  I need to find some ideas to post on for next week!  Suggestions are always helpful........lol

I love Yarn Day!

Tomorrow, Friday, October 14th is I love Yarn Day!

Or so said the knitting email I got a couple of days ago...............lol

Like most Crafty people, I have a range of different sewing things that I do.  I started out as a cross stitch person.  My first project I remember was my Grandma Antloger gave me a bedspread to cross stitch.  Needless to say I finished it about 4 years ago and got it quilted!  However, that started me in my career.  She also taught me how to crochet.  At 10 I could make my own barbie clothes, vases and Christmas decorations.

As I got older I got into the sewing and quilting.  Now I longarm, quilt and knit.  I can still crochet but it doesnt' seem to be as "hip" (yes I'm starting to show my age) then knitting and I wanted to see if I could do it.  I won't tell you how many scarves I've knitted since July or how many I still have to do before Christmas or how many other projects I have started.

Get back on Track Jenn, I know your saying that!  Well the track is that I love yarn! Not sure how I will celebrate on Friday.  Maybe pick up Mr Snowman and see how much of his body I can knit up!  I guess the point of this rambling is how is your stash of yarn?   lol

How to get what you want for Christmas!

Hi All!

If you remember, yesterday I was talking about toy shopping.

What everyone wants for Christmas might or not be in your scope of things yet.  However, Halloween is not far away and that means only about two months.

This year let's get you what you want.  So here is this week's discussion:

a) Tell me what your top 10 things in the sewing/quilting/knitting and crochet must haves are!

In a week or two, I will post a top 10 notions must have list that we have in the store!  If you give me some good ideas they will be included in the list!

Now on to the way you can get what you really want for Christmas.  Face it sometimes the children, spouses and grandchildren forget about you or get you something you really do not want.  You love it anyhow!

However, if you come in and do some browsing/dreaming we can put it on a wish list for you.  Then your lovely family comes in gives us your name and we can tell them exactly what you want.  (within reason it must be something we sell.......lol)

Or if all else fails (this works for major holidays other than Christmas, like your birthday, mother's day, it's 80+ day, you make the holiday up day!) tell them to get you a Gift Card to your favorite store.  Just make sure you clarify that is us, Quilters Depot!  lol

We sell them in any denomination fron $5 to the sky is the limit(or their credit card max.lol)!

So what do you want for Christmas?

Toy Catalogs?

Do you remember the good ole days of toy catalogs?

My job here at the store is a lot like that.  There are two ways for us to buy fabrics and notions.

a) ms/mr distributor comes in and shows us stuff.
b) we catalog shop.

either way is dangerous.  think about being 9 years old and having the toy catalog in front of you.  You want EVERYTHING!  That is the way I am.  However, just like when I was 9 you are told you cannot.  Ok, so it's the checkbook that is doing the yelling but Mom and I tell each other that alot.  Are you sure you want that........lol

It's all about the dream lists.

That's what I want you to start thinking of.  What's on your dream list and I'll tell you how to get exactly what you want for Christmas.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month!

Hi Everyone!

We all are touched in one way or another by Breast Cancer.  Whether we have family members, friends or ourselves who have battled the disease, not many people can say they have not been touched.

Here at Quilters Depot we are trying to do charity events.  This month we are doing two.

On Wednesday, October 12th.  That is this Wednesday!  We are turning our sewing circle into a charity event.  Come in and help us:
  1.  Cut and kit dignity robes.
  2. Volunteer to sew the dignity robes.  Stay and Sew or take them home and bring them back by Pauline's designated date.
  3. Donate 100% cotton fabric in 2.5 or 3 yard cuts.
The sewing circle is free to all who participate.  We really hope that we can get a boatload of robes to donate to a local cancer treatment center.

Our second Charity Event is making chemo caps.
Come in and get the free pattern.  The pattern includes two patterns.  One for you who crochet and one for those of you who knit.  I have started mine, but I'm not moving very fast on it.    All you need is 100% cotton yarn and off you can go!  We have the pink varigated yarn in the store and for the month of October that yarn is 15% off if you tell us you are making chemo caps!  I'd like to have a first donation date of the beginning of December for those.

To liven up this post here is the picture of the pink fountain in Gateway Center, Downton where I work.

Success Story/Christmas Gift

First, Tina if you are reading this don't...........lol

Hi all!

Here are some pictures of the project I just finished which is also my friend Tina's Christmas gift.

I want to say I started working on this back in May or June.  I can't remember at this point..........lol  The fabric is a combination of Moda's Civil War Reunion (we still have the bolts you all voted on!) and some other civil war reproduction fabrics that matched so well I had to use them.

It is designed by me!  Some of you know I hate patterns..........lol  Which will be kind of ironic if future plans work out for me.  Cannot tell you those plans because I am not sure if I am smart enough or talented enough to do what i want to do.......lol

It was pieced by me!
It was quilted by me on the Pro Stitcher.  If you were in the week I was doing it you all heard my curses since me and the computer were not getting along.

And I did the binding.  I hate binding too!  lol  But this quilt was done all by me.  Look closely it's too large to hang in the store and it will be shipped to buffalo in a few weeks for Christmas.  You cannot tell from these pictures but the binding is made up of almost everything that was used in the quilt.  I love making scrappy bindings!

Enjoy the pictures and let me know what you think!

If you cannot tell.  Those are Magnolia's that are quilted into the quilt.  Also don't forget when you make those quilts to do a label and name the quilts!  I will admit I never do until this one........lol  So do as I say not as I always do!

Hi everyone!

I am starting something new when I remember.......lol
