September 2013 Classes @Quilters Depot

I thought I'd take a few minutes today and tell you about the classes for the first half of the month!

Fall Wall Leaf This month we have a great leaf for you to make for a decoration.  Makes a great door decoration or something to decorate the house or work with!  This is a TWO week class When: Session 1: Friday September 6th and 20th @10:30 am to 1:30 pm. Session 2: Wednesday, September 25th and October 2nd @ 6 to 9pm. Cost: $25 +supplies.  Teacher: Jane Casne

Introduction to Smocking: Have you always wanted to learn how to smock?  In this introduction to Smocking class you will make a sampler that will teach you English Smocking.  You will learn how to do the basic stitches, how to mark the center point, preparing the thread, stitch depth, needle placement, thread tension and centering the smocking.  The teacher will also demonstrate the process of using a smocking pleater to pleat the fabric!  This is a four week class. Note: this pic is an example of smocking not your project.  When: Session 1: Friday, September 6th, 20th, October 4th and 18th @6 to 9pm. Session 2: Mondays, September 9th, 23rd, October 7th and 21st. Cost: $25 + supplies.  Teacher: Pat Renihan

Intro to Sewing - Morning Glory Apron: Several of our regulars have expressed the desire to build on your basic sewing skills (beyond quilt making).  We begin to address that request with our Morning Glory Apron pattern by the Paisley Pincushion. This is a pattern that LOOKS difficult, but is surprisingly easy to do!  We will discuss some basics required in sewing, apply a few techniques you may have never tried before, some machine maintenance, future endeavors and more!  In case you are unaware, right now aprons are HOT! This one will give you the opportunity to utilize some fun fabric you love and want to incorporate into your life, build your skills inventory, and when completed make a great gift for yourself or someone else!  Watch the newsletter for more opportunities for basic sewing classes for adults and kids! This is a TWO week class! When: Saturday, September 7th and 28th @noon to 3pm.  Cost: $25 + supplies + pattern.  Teacher: Deb Will

Radiant Star: Here’s your chance to do the quilt you may have always wanted to do but felt you could not tackle it alone.  The Radiant Star (also known as the Lone Star) quilt is an eye-catching and interesting technique quilt.  The color selection is important to show off the centerpiece of your quilt.  Contrast in the color really makes it stand out.  Techniques will be emphasized in class.  Accuracy is important to make this quilt work.  The 4-Color wall-hanging quilt is the one we have selected to make from the book but all techniques learned can apply to the larger quilts. This is an intermediate quilting class that required precise cutting and piecing!  This is a two month class! REQUIRED for the class is Eleanor Burns’ Quilt in a Day book entitled “Radiant Star Quilts”.  Register early so enough books can be ordered for the class. When: Saturdays, September 14th & October 5th @9am to noon Cost: $30 +supplies and book Teacher: Peggy Gibson.

Success Stories @Quilters Depot!

Time for what I enjoy blogging about the most!  The success stories!

Now I will admit I had more than one but once again I forgot to unload Mom's camera.  I'm starting to think that needs to be a line on the to do list!

We do have a success story from the iron caddy class!  Awesome work Jane Ann!  All she needs is her buttons and she can fold this cool little caddy and carry her iron anywhere she wants to go!

This Week w/Jenn @Quilters Depot!

Happy Sunday all!

Well I have my monkey's body done!  Now for the arms, ears, mouth and tail!  It's a little scary right now but I know it'll be cute when it's done!

I will let you know this the last this week w/Jenn for the next 13 weeks!  Don't be upset it'll be back.  I have decided to put the weekly Quilt Along on the blog on Sundays so if you are not an email list person you can still participate!  If I actually finish anything I will put it under success stories with the customers!

I hope that you all will participate in the Quilt Along.  I love my quilt that I made and can't wait to get it long armed!

Knit the Bridge! Check out my Pictures and find your piece!

It's Friday and you are going to get a bonus blog this week!

The day after the Warhol Bridge was yarn bombed I took a walk up to the bridge to check out the Knit The Bridge success!

Here are some pictures for you all to enjoy if you are not making it down to see it.  Also here is a link to find your piece if you participated.  There is not pic of mine since it is on the outside of the bridge facing the Rachel Carson Bridge.  I haven't decided whether to bum a camera with a really good zoom or not.  Stay tuned to find out if I do it or not.

http://knitthebridge.com/ktb-pub/Tour.ktb

If you did not put to recognize your contribution then you will not see it.  If you did a smaller piece you will be in a group.  You will have to scroll to see all the names!  Hope that helps you all find your piece!

If you participated, remember you are now part of Pittsburgh History!

BREAKING NEWS! Santa has promised us help @ Christmas!

I know none of you want to hear about Christmas, but it's almost here!

Our friends look at us weirdly when we say we are working on Christmas gifts and running the air conditioning!  However, we all know we are not weird.  We just know what we have to do to get our gifts done!

When we had Christmas in July, Santa dropped off a load of fabrics and we got to talking!  He saw that we now have the Elf on the Shelf fabrics. (If you are unfamiliar with the Elf on the shelf story check it out or come read our book so you will understand or my story below will just make me sound like I am having a mental breakdown!)

Santa and I got to talking and he said you know I lend out my elves to families and I consider your bunch at Quilters Depot a family.  A sometimes dysfunctional family, but you all are kids at heart so I am going to lend you one of my special elves named Nick.  You can have him from November 15th to December 15th.  Remember, NO ONE can touch him or he'll lose his powers!  That is RULE #1!!!!!!!

I thanked Santa he handed me a candy cane and with a tweak of his nose he was gone!

So From November 15th to December 15th, come in and check out where Nick the Elf is that day!  We are not sure what Nick has up his sleeve to help us with the holiday season!  He'll let us know, but he has visited briefly and said that he loves to get his picture taken with kids and adults alike.  He also loves to listen to what you want for Christmas and he always has other surprises in store for good boys and girls!  Stay tuned to the newsletter for more information in the coming months!

Success Stories Day 2 - It's all about Ink!

I promised to show you all the fun that our Ink class had!

This is the most fun class whether you are using the markers (cleaner) or the ink that looks like paint.

No they didn't make a cake.  That is shaving cream and Ink!  Looks good enough to eat!  Place your fabric in there and you get beautiful fabrics!

Check out the fabrics that Annette G made!  Awesome work.  Check out the Doggie in picture two and the flowers!  The dark piece you see was a black and white that became colorful with markers!

Stay tuned for those of you who have kids.  We are thinking of doing markers for Christmas!

Awesome work!  I want to find myself some markers and go to work!  If anybody has Holiday coloring books you are not using bring them in!  I have lots of ideas for the kids!

Success Stories Day 1.

I decided to split up the Success Stories into two days!

I always like to give my kids a day to themselves!

This week we have the second of our Kids 101 Bargellos!

Those are Ella's feet you see!  She still has to tie her quilt but is almost done!  She did an awesome job and has a born ability to pick colors that would put most of you established quilters to shame!

What's New @Quilters Depot!

It's Monday so that means what's new!  Well not alot.  Most of the stuff were re-orders!  However, we do have two new things for you.

As you know Hexagons are HOT!  I am lazy so I decided to get you all some pre-cuts!  Robert Kaufman has come out with pre-cut Hexagons in their well known Kona fabrics!  We have 3 color waves of these that each have 41 assorted colors in them!  So if you are working or want to work on a Hexagon quilt than come on in!

The second thing that we have for your crafty pleasure is some Ink for you to make your own fabric.  If you missed this class last week you missed a really fun class!  Check out Wednesday's Blog for pictures of the fun!  I don't have alot of the Ink so if you want it hurry in and snap it up.  We have eye droppers, a set of 12 colors and threee separate colors you can buy individually!

Over the Hump Day @Quilters Depot!

Do you know what today is?  Do you?  Come on you know what today is!  It's over the Hump Day!  (sorry I was channeling the big camel on the tv commericial)

I had an idea of what to blog about today, but then it flew out the window as I drove along rt51.

I shouldn't complain I actually was able to use the tunnel for the past three days both ways!  That ends again tonight. Who else is fed up with the Liberty Tunnels being closed!?  UGH!  I bit the bullet the first two weeks of the closures and went an alternative detour that I mapped out myself.  It worked out well.

I am fed up with detours so instead I am going to park my vehicle at the store and riding the T.  So if you see my truck I'm not really there during the day. :-(  Hopefully, I will be motivated to get into the truck and still go to the gym vs just getting off the T and going into the store.  We shall see though.

Have a good week everyone I think I am out of ideas for this week's blog!  Stay tuned to your emails tomorrow for the newsletter and if you are needing to work on UFO's we have one on Friday night!  Come spend the evening with us!

Success Stories @Quilters Depot!

So first I would like to say I have a successful completion of the Kids 101 Bargello class, but I am going to hold off on showing her quilt until the second one is done which should be this week!  Student 1 finished early due to going on vacation!

So today you get all of the adult success stories!

The first is Jasmin's success story!  The one on the right is hers!  I just love the Selvage Class!  Hello to all her relatives in Germany who are viewing the blog to check out what she is doing!

We had a customer come in to show off her rag quilt and pillow!  Isn't this beautiful!

Next we have Patty D's candle mat!
The rest I can say Awesome work I just can't put their names since they are day customers and I was not there to take the pictures!  Beautiful work though!
