Jenn's
Mystery Modern Quilt Along!

Email 13 will be about borders.
Now when we began this quilt we were to have a 68”x88” quilt.  Since I chose Option 2 from last week my quilt is 74”x82”.  Were you close on your width?  If you are making this quilt for yourself as I am it was about customizing it.
We now have to decide on our borders.  Since we want 88”, I need two boarders of 3” each.  If you need more or less length calculate it now.  I eventually went much bigger on my boarders as you will see in my final picture.  This was just a personal option because of the way my bed is and I like to be able to tuck my quilt and pull it over my head.
I am going to give you the way I chose to do my boarders before enlarging it.
Pick two colors.  Cut two strips of each 3.25 X Width of Fabric.  Sew two together.  Mix them or one long color.  You will now have a strip 3.25” x 80+”.
Then sew this strip to the top of your quilt as border one.
With the second color do the same thing and make it your bottom border.
Trim to the appropriate width!.
If you would like a larger quilt do the above however make it a wider border!  I actually did a boarder of about 9" top and bottom to get the drop I wanted.  It's your quilt do as you like!
Your done!  Find backing, quilt, bind and you are done!  As a tidbit.  I am using Kona white for the backing and flannel instead of batting to make my quilt a little bit lighter!
Send me your pictures or bring them into the store to show off!  I am thinking maybe in February we will have a show and tell if you all are interested!
I hope you have enjoyed this mystery quilt along! Let me know!  Critique my instructions!  I want to do another one in mid 2014, and I need your input! My quilt is below!  I used kitties in my quilting!  I need to get it home and put it on my bed!

Jenn's
Mystery Modern Quilt Along!

Email 12.
In the beginning of this quilt along i reminded you to read through the instructions before you cut or sew.  This is now the time to make sure you read first.  I started this with a certain size in mind.  After finishing I decided to please myself I wanted it bigger because I like a lot of drop in my twin quilt!  This is your quilt you do as you want.  Do not have a fit if the quilt is bigger or smaller than anticipated.  Go with the flow and appreciate the beauty of your quilting and your fabrics!
At this point you have a decision to be made.  Do you like your twin bedspread to have a larger drop ie you want it bigger than 68” to 70”  I found that if I follow option 1 it didn’t quite come to where I wanted it.  Option 1 will give you a 68” to 70” x82 inch quilt top.  Choose.  Flip a coin if you have to!
Option 1: Sew Block 1(safety pin should be on the outer edge of the quilt) to 2 to 3 to 4 to 5 to 6 to 7 to 8.  On the last block your safety pin should be on the outer edge.  Here is a picture of my quilt top!

You should now have a 68 x ~80 inch quilt top.  Now is the time to clean up your edges.  Find the shortest one and trim the quilt top to that piece.  Take note of what that amount is.  Mine is actually 70” x 82”  That is fine!
Option 2.  Sew strips 1 to 2 to 3 to 4.
Pick 1 color.  Cut two 5.5” x wof strips.  Sew them together so you now have a 5.5 x ~80” strip.  Sew this to the quilt top and continue on by sewing strip 5 to this than 6, than 7 than 8!
Time to trim.  Find the shortest one and trim the quilt top to that piece.  Mine came out to be 74”x82” Next week we do the boarders and we will be done.  This is my quilt with option 2 being chose.  You can see the big pink strip in the middle is my adding to the quilt.
What you don’t need to know is I took the one above and ripped to insert the larger strip but I saved you from ripping.  See I can be nice! If you did option 1 and find you should have done option 2 you can do the same thing as I did.  Find the middle of the quilt.  Rip out the seam. Then cut the additional strip and sew back together.  Remember patterns are to be tweaked so that you love your quilt!

Next week we do the boarders and we will be done!
